Work in linguistics

1985. Pronouns of Laziness. Proceedings of NELS 15, p.111-132, McGill University, Montreal. Published by the Graduate Student Linguistic Association, U. Mass Amherst.

1987. ATB-Variables. Unpublished revision of part 2 of my thesis.
Parasitic gaps are across-the-board variables formed in the course of the derivation. Pronouns of laziness (cf. sloppy identity) are across-the-board variables. These two variable-like elements are products of the special configuration permitted by coordinate structures.

1998. Syntax and Semantics of the Prefix mis-, in Actes de l’atelier de linguistique, congrès de la SAES, J-C. Souesme (réd.), Centre de recherche sur les Ecritures de langue anglaise, Cycnos, vol.15, n° spécial.

1995. Les noms à Montée, in Rencontres : Etudes de syntaxe et de morphologie, Presses de l'Université Paris X-Nanterre.
There are indeed raising nouns, on the condition that they be morphologically simple, like chance, or French air (‘look’).

2005. Marrant et les adjectifs comme ça. Lingvisticae Investigationes, XXVIII-2.
Study of adjectives like marrant, slang words with exceptional properties. And study of object pro in French, which is not an empty category, but the absence of projection of an argument. Object-pro sentences like la musique, ça attriste are fully similar to lexical items like attristant, which take no objects in the syntax.

2005. Les métonymies verbales, in Grammaire et figures de style, C. Delmas et J. Guéron (eds.) Presses de la Sorbonne Nouvelle.
Study of expressions naming signs of signs, like donner le feu vert, or give a thumbs up.

2010. A that-trace effect on ellipsis. Unpublished paper claiming that ellipsis is subject to a that-trace effect.

2011. Kissing goodbye. Corela 9-2.
Syntax and semantics of that construction, which is produced by the formation of a complex predicate, close to that involved in resultative constructions, but not the same: resultatives integrate a Small Clause, this construction integrates an N (goodbye). It confirms Talmy’s manner condition on conflation phenomena.

2012. The hell in English grammar, in Relations, connexions, dépendances : hommage au professeur Claude Guimier. Nicole Le Querler, Franck Neveu, Emmanuelle Roussel (eds.) Presses Universitaires de Rennes.
The paper explains why the hell inserts where it does and why it yields the interpretation it does.

2013. Symmetric structures. Corela 11,1.
NPN structures are formed by a mental operation done in the mode of symmetric action.

2017. Phy-inside-psych words and clauses. Unpublished paper claiming that adjectives like jaw-dropping in English, marrant in French and the desiderative clausal construction in Finnish, are phy-in-psych constructs, the form of which results from the particular grammar of the language considered.

2018. Condition B in NPN. McGill Working Papers in Linguistics.

2020. Phy-inside-psych adjectives. Corela 18,2.
Contrairement à amusing et touching, certains adjectifs psychologiques en ing/ant ne sont pas dérivés d'une base verbale psy (cf. jaw-dropping et marrant). Les verbes de ces adjectifs nomment les réactions physiques typiques des émotions qui provoquent celles-là. Les similitudes et les différences entre ces adjectifs s’expliquent en fonction de la grammaire individuelle de la langue en question. De plus, l’article montre comment les adjectifs comme f…ing en anglais sont des variantes de jaw-dropping.

2020. Gapping, event-kinds and Indirect Binding. Draft. Prompted by the observation that Gapping can look inside manner adjuncts, the article claims that the domain of Gapping is the syntactic expression of a function provided by the event-kind named by the V. The analysis works with the idea that there is no movement with Gapping, which Maps a Small Clause onto a clause, forming a union of two clauses (Goodall 1987).
